Sonia Mize, Master’s Level Intern
Sonia is a Master’s level Counseling intern and pursuing a Master of Science (M.S.) in Counseling at Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia, with an expected graduation date of August 2027. Sonia graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) at Mary Baldwin College in 1988. She enjoys working with individuals of all ages from young to older adults. She is interested in treating symptoms of anxiety and depression and implementing different therapeutic approaches from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Narrative Therapy.
Over the years, Sonia has found deep fulfillment in real-life experiences that have allowed her to support and encourage others as they navigate through mental health journeys. Even though those experiences have been personal and nonprofessional, she was inspired to pursue a career where she could bring the same compassion, empathy, and desire to help others into professional work. Her goal is to find that same sense of purpose as a clinician, who supports individuals through unique journeys toward greater well-being. Fifteen years ago, she experienced breast cancer and underwent treatment. Since that time, Sonia has had the privilege of informally supporting and counseling dozens of women facing similar experiences. She learned no two people or experiences are exactly alike. She developed an understanding of appreciation for the importance of meeting each person where they are and listening to their individual story. After turning 60 last year, Sonia found herself embracing and appreciating the many life experiences that have shaped her today. One of those experiences has been serving as a Stephen Minister at First Presbyterian Church and developing skills to support church members struggling with life circumstances, including illness, loss of a loved one, and divorce.
Sonia is excited to begin working with new clients and looks forward to compassionately listening to their stories, learning about their experiences, and supporting them along their individual journeys.
